Wolfgang Van Halen to play bass on Tremonti tour

Wolfgang Van Halen will be covering bass duties for the Tremonti solo tour which begins tonight in Rhode Island.  In a surprise announcement, Wolfgang revealed yesterday on his Twitter page that he would be playing bass at tonight's show in West Greenwich.  Today, Mark Tremonti announced on his Twitter page that Wolfgang would be playing bass on the entire tour, relieving Brian Marshall of his duties.  Brian, who also plays bass in Alter Bridge and Creed, has until now been the bassist in Mark's solo band, but is said to have bowed out of this tour for personal reasons.  It is unclear whether this news affects only the USA leg of the tour, or the European portion as well.

Update 9/13: In an official press statement Wolfgang confirmed that he would be joining the band for the remainder of the tour, saying, "I am excited to be joining the band and playing this incredible music with some of my best friends in the business."

Wolfgang, the son of rock guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, has live concert experience playing bass on several Van Halen tours, as well as in the studio on Van Halen's latest album, A Different Kind of Truth, which was released earlier this year.  It is rumored that Mark had originally wanted Wolfgang to play bass on his solo record, but Wolfgang was unable to do so due to his Van Halen touring commitments.

Mark Tremonti made news last year when Wolfgang invited him to Van Halen's 5150 studios to hear the band perform the then-unreleased record live in its entirety, albeit without vocals.  Mark called the experience "incredible", and was widely quoted as saying the hotly-anticipated new album sounded like "old school Van Halen."

Earlier that year, Wolfgang joined Alter Bridge on stage at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, playing drums on "One Day Remains" (video below).  The guys were also joined on stage by Mark's future solo bandmate Eric Friedman, who played rhythm guitar during the same song.  Wolfgang apparently brought his father along to watch the show from side-stage.  That concert occurred on the same day that Alter Bridge performed "Isolation" on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
